Pioneer DJ DDJ-1000 Review: Deep Test Drive ft. MaddJazz

“Several months after it’s release, many are in love while others aren’t swayed from tried-and-true Serato alternatives. We wanted to dig into the DDJ-1000 to see if it lives up to the hype or if it’s too good to be true.

We asked decorated DJ/Producer and Thre3Style competitor MaddJazz to put the DDJ-1000 through its paces and let us know his thoughts.

king's dead routine featured on djcity

"Chicago DJ and turntablist MaddJazz has flipped “King’s Dead” in a new routine for DJcityTV. The former DMC and Red Bull Music 3Style competitor applied his technical scratching and beat juggling to the track.

The hit song from the Black Panther soundtrack boasts an all-star lineup of Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and James Blake. The track reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was DJcity’s 11th most downloaded track of January.

In 2013, MaddJazz appeared on DJcityTV’s acclaimed Chicago episode of the Cutting Room, alongside DJs Trentino, Big Once, Boi Jeanius, and Flipside.

Chicago scratch sessions iv

I got a chance to showcase on the new Rane 72 mixer at the Chicago Scratch Sessions IV. We literally only had a couple hours some days prior to the event to get familiar with the mixer so I decided perform something I can perform comfortably which was an excerpt from my 2015 Redbull Threestyle routine.

Ode to the get down

I'm not gonna front, I got inspired to put together this little mix / routine together after watching season one of the show "The Get Down". Yes, I know the show has it's corny moments but I liked the fact that it exposes today's youth to how Hip Hop culture was born and foremost i was captivated by the music. Originally I just gonna shoot this video in my studio using just my go pro but then I got ambitious and decided to film it on a rooftop but also create a little story behind it that captures a day in my life.

"Some of our readers might remember MaddJazz from the Chicago edition of DJcityTV’s “Cutting Room” series. The Windy City’s epic throw down is considered by many as the best of the series, and MaddJazz’s scratching abilities are one of the reasons why. In early February, he put his skills to the test once again during the 2015 Red Bull Thre3style Qualifier in Chicago. MaddJazz went up against some of his city’s best" - DJcity TV

Maddjazz & d-51 ft. bobby bushay "back to a week ago"

"Chicago house music is staple, but how well do we know vocal juke from the same area. As long time supporters of ghetto house and all its sub genres, we're happy to present this single from Chi-towns finest, Maddjazz & D-51. We were first introduced to the guys through their crew Ghetto Division crew who represent the new sound of the midwest, and we've always liked the well crafted sounds of house, juke, ghetto tech and club music the guys have been crafting.

The single featuring the vocals by funny and talented Bobby Bushay is catchy as hell, keeping us singing 'back to a week ago' over and over, and bringing us memories of the Dance Mania days. Remember ‘Six Foe - Seasons’? Yeah, we do too. This new single is equally catchy and definitely a future classic in its own genre. Remixes in this pack come from Paris, Tokyo and Helsinki with such genre trailblazers as Kaptain Cadillac, Keito and Top Billin naturally." - Top Billin (Finland)

"Chi-town gets a chance to shine in our latest episode of the "Cutting Room." This four minute scratch session features Chicago's Boi Jeanius (103.5 Kiss FM), Flipside (Jump Smokers, B96 Chicago), Big Once (US Red Bull Thre3style champ), Maddjazz and Trentino (103.5 Kiss FM, Midwest Red Bull Thre3style champ) getting wild on the decks." - DJcity TV

2013 redbull thre3style chicago 2nd place winning set

In 2013 i was invited to compete in the Redbull Thre3style Chicago qualifier. I went up against some great DJs and finished in 2nd place. Although i found various video clips of my performance i didn't have any footage covering the entire set from beginning to end, so I decided to capture the set in its entirety and share it with the world.
